CARE GUIDE FOR CURTAINS, ROMAN BLINDS & SOFT FURNISHINGS

A NOTE TO OUR CLIENTS

At Sacha Boxall Interiors, we help you carefully select fabrics not only for their beauty, but for how they will live and evolve within your home.

All soft furnishings are influenced by their environment. Subtle changes over time - such as softening, relaxing, or a slight drop in length - are a natural characteristic of quality fabrics and part of their charm.

This guide will help you understand what to expect and how to care for your furnishings so they remain elegant for years to come.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR FABRIC

COTTON - TIMELESS & VERSATILE

A classic choice, cotton offers softness and a refined, understated finish.

What to expect:

  • May settle slightly in length after hanging, particularly in warmer rooms

  • Softens beautifully over time

  • Can shrink if exposed to high temperatures

Care:

  • Avoid high heat

  • Allow time to settle before any final adjustments

LINEN - EFFORTLESSLY ELEGANT

Linen is prized for its natural texture and relaxed sophistication.

What to expect:

  • Will soften and drop more noticeably after installation

  • Creasing is part of its inherent character

  • May respond subtly to humidity in the air

Care:

  • Allow the fabric to hang and settle naturally

  • Embrace its relaxed, lived-in look

WOOL - WARM & STRUCTURED

Wool offers natural insulation and a beautifully soft yet structured appearance.

What to expect:

  • Holds its shape well, with minimal drop compared to linen or cotton

  • Naturally resilient and less prone to creasing

  • Can react to humidity, feeling slightly heavier in damp conditions

Care:

  • Avoid excessive moisture, which may cause shrinkage or distortion

  • Allow space for airflow to maintain freshness

SILK - DELICATE & REFINED

Silk is synonymous with elegance, offering a soft sheen and fluid drape.

What to expect:

  • May relax and drop slightly over time

  • Sensitive to sunlight and can fade or weaken if exposed

  • Lighter silks may require lining for stability

Care:

  • Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight

  • Handle gently to preserve the fibres

VELVET - LUXURIOUS & RICH

Velvet brings depth, warmth, and a truly indulgent finish to any space.

What to expect:

  • Can drop slightly over time, particularly heavier velvets

  • The pile may shade or mark when touched or brushed—this is a natural characteristic

  • Light and movement will create variation in tone

Care:

  • Light steaming can help lift and refresh the pile. We recommend only a professional do this.

  • Avoid crushing or prolonged pressure

  • Allow curtains to hang freely to maintain their drape

SYNTHETIC FABRICS - PRACTICAL & STABLE

(Including polyester and similar man-made fibres)

Synthetic fabrics are designed for durability and ease of maintenance, making them a versatile choice.

What to expect:

  • Excellent shape retention with minimal stretching or dropping

  • Resistant to shrinking and creasing

  • Particularly suitable for structured designs such as Roman blinds

Care:

  • Low maintenance

  • Avoid very high heat, as fibres can be heat-sensitive

BLENDED FABRICS - BALANCED PERFORMANCE

Blends combine the softness of natural fibres with the resilience of synthetics.

What to expect:

  • Gentle settling over time, with improved stability

  • A practical choice for both relaxed and structured designs

Care:

  • Follow guidance based on the dominant fibre

  • Generally easy to maintain and more forgiving in everyday use

ROMAN BLINDS - SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

Roman blinds are both decorative and functional, requiring thoughtful care.

Please note:

Natural fabrics may relax slightly, particularly in warmer environments. Heavier fabrics such as velvet or wool should be carefully considered to ensure proper support. Delicate fabrics like silk benefit from lining for added stability. Positioning near radiators or strong sunlight may increase movement or wear. Linings help improve structure, longevity, and overall performance.

Recommendation:
We advise allowing blinds to settle after installation.

YOUR HOME ENVIRONMENT

Your interior setting plays an important role in how fabrics behave. Warm rooms may encourage fabrics to relax and drop slightly. Cooler spaces help maintain structure. Sunlight can gradually soften colours over time, particularly in delicate fabrics. Humidity may cause natural fibres to absorb moisture and gently expand. These subtle changes are entirely normal and reflect the quality of the materials used.

SIMPLE CARE GUIDELINES

  • Allow new curtains and blinds to hang for several days

  • Keep furnishings away from direct heat sources where possible

  • Always follow recommended instructions

  • Expect and appreciate a small degree of natural movement over time

FINAL THOUGHT

Choose a fabric with care to suit both your space and lifestyle. Natural materials will develop a softer, more relaxed character, while structured fabrics will maintain a more tailored finish. From the understated elegance of linen to the richness of velvet and the refinement of silk, each fabric brings its own unique quality - designed to enhance your home beautifully over time.
